CLING-FREE, Idol-B-Gone!April 27, 2013
"Those who cling to worthless idols turn away from God's love for them. But I, with shouts of grateful praise, will sacrifice to You. What I have vowed I will make good. I will say, 'Salvation comes from the LORD. And the LORD commanded the fish, and it vomited Jonah onto dry land." (Jonah 2:8-10 NIV)
Can it get much darker or depressive than the slimy, stinky innards of a fish? I mean inside one for like, three days! Still being alive as undigested fecal matter lost in an ocean with absolute hopelessness does not make for a happy day. It is all the more abysmal if your own opinionated rebellion escorted you into such a circumstance. If Jonah's arms were not pinned down by a straight-jacket of seaweed he would likely chosen suicide with a broken fish bone over a slow dissolve in the disgusting stomach acids of God's obedient sea creature.
Some choose to debate as to whether or not the story actually happened or if it is only an allegorical picture of Jesus in the grave. Dear LORD Jesus! What of the extraordinary HOPE found in God's lavish and extreme measures to get His message of mercy to mankind? We may not know why the LORD chose Jonah or why He didn't just get another mouth piece when Jonah ran the other direction, but in staying with His chosen messenger and with the message, ALL involved received God's mercy.
May our hearts rejoice in Hope and in receiving the fullness of God's mercy and may our souls be healed by the release of any forgiveness we have held on to along our journey. May our lives be cleansed from all clinging and worthless idols, and specially those of our own narrow, human opinions. SALVATION Up!
PRAYER: Lord, grant us a glorious renewal in the HOPE and JOY of Your rich salvation. Cleanse our hearts from all lethargic attitudes that so easily morph into judgments and chains. Free us in the wind of Your good Spirit to always carry in our hearts and confession the liberating truth of Your mercy and Your unfailing love. Don't vomit us from Your mouth, LORD, but vomit our lives from the bindings of our anger. In Jesus' name, amen

EARLY will I seek Thee!
The 'sprung' of Spring beckons to early times in the Word and prayers.
Take time. Get into God's word so that God's speaking may have opportunity
to get into you. We all believe in the importance of it and often the only thing
that stops many of us is the snooze alarm. Early in the day or late, taking time
for our LORD is simply part of walking with Him and following hard after
"The LORD looked down from heaven upon the children of men, to see if there were any that did understand, and seek God." (Ps. 14:2)
